For this project, I designed a book cover for a famous couple of my choosing, tasked with visually communicating their personality, relationship, and cultural identity through subtle storytelling rather than a literal approach. I chose Vincent Vega and Mia Wallace from Pulp Fiction — one of cinema's most iconic on-screen duos.
My objective was to create a cover that captured the essence of their relationship through symbolic, non-literal design. The key constraint was avoiding anything too obvious — the design had to reward the viewer's interpretation rather than spell it out.
I began by rewatching the film to understand the couple's dynamic, then worked through a word association exercise — mapping adjectives to tangible objects that could translate visually. Music emerged as a central theme, leading me to the broken record as my main symbol: a metaphor for Vincent and Mia's relationship — beautiful, but destined not to last. A drop of blood nods to the violent world they inhabit, bringing both symbols into a cohesive composition.
The final cover communicated the couple's story through symbolism and restraint. Beyond the deliverable itself, the project helped me understand the power that typography and symbols hold in conveying a message without ever stating it directly.
